The Banco Nacional del Paraguay was established in 1871, a product of the country's desperate reconstruction after the War of the Triple Alliance had effectively destroyed the Paraguayan state — including its male population. By the time this note was issued in 1886, the bank operated under chronic instability, and its notes circulated alongside several competing private and quasi-official issues in a monetary environment that was far from orderly.
ABNC handled most of Paraguay's printing needs in this period, a relationship born from geography and commercial reach rather than any formal exclusivity. The watermarked paper was a deliberate security measure against a local forgery problem that plagued several South American issues of the decade.
