El Banco del Paraguay was established in 1871, making it the country's first bank — a joint-stock institution chartered just six years after the catastrophic War of the Triple Alliance had reduced Paraguay's male population by an estimated sixty percent and left the national economy in ruins. The 1882 date places this note in the bank's early operating years, when circulating paper currency of any kind was a fragile novelty in Asunción.
ABNC's involvement was typical for Latin American issuers of the period seeking credibility through an internationally recognized printer. The watermark is the sole security measure — modest, but not unusual for a low-denomination note from a bank operating in a still-recovering economy with limited counterfeiting infrastructure to worry about.
