Banco Mauá y Ca. was the Argentine arm of Irineu Evangelista de Sousa's financial network — Mauá himself being the Brazilian entrepreneur whose banking empire stretched from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires and Montevideo before collapsing spectacularly in 1875. This Rosario branch note was issued during the years when provincial and private banks in Argentina still operated with considerable autonomy to issue their own currency, well before the 1890s reforms that eventually consolidated monetary authority at the national level.

The American Bank Note Company contract for this series reflects Mauá's consistent preference for high-quality engraved printing over cheaper local alternatives — a commercial decision as much as a security one.
