2 Pesos Fuertes

The Intendencia de Santo Domingo issued these notes during one of the most turbulent stretches in Dominican history — the period of Spanish Reannexation (1861–1865), when the Dominican Republic voluntarily rejoined the Spanish Empire under Pedro Santana, then fought a brutal guerrilla war to expel Spanish forces. The Intendencia itself was the Spanish colonial fiscal administration reinstated to manage the territory, and these pesos fuertes circulated under that authority rather than any sovereign Dominican institution.

The reannexation ultimately failed. Spain withdrew in 1865, and currency issued under the Intendencia had no future in the restored republic.
