This coin was issued under a decree pushed through in the final weeks of the Peronist government before the catastrophic 2001–2002 economic collapse that saw five presidents in ten days and the freezing of bank deposits under the corralito. The timing is striking: a commemorative honoring Eva Perón entered circulation precisely as Argentina suspended convertibility and defaulted on roughly $100 billion in sovereign debt — the largest default in history at the time.
The reeded-edge variety (KM#135.1) is distinguished from the plain-edge KM#135.2, a split that emerged from production inconsistencies at the Casa de Moneda rather than any deliberate policy change.
