El Banco de la Compañía de Crédito de Puerto Plata was one of several short-lived private banks chartered in the Dominican Republic during the 1870s and 1880s, a period when the central government lacked both the infrastructure and the political stability to anchor a national currency. Puerto Plata, as the Republic's principal northern port, had enough commercial activity to support private note issue — at least in theory.
The American Bank Note Company held the contract, as it did for much of Latin American private banking paper of this period. Whether this note saw meaningful circulation before the bank's closure is unclear; Dominican private bank failures of this era were rapid and redemption rarely guaranteed.
