To the left, an oval portrait vignette of a bearded gentleman in three-quarter view is framed by fine guilloche work, with the word DOS repeated in the lower corners; to the right, a second oval portrait of a clean-shaven gentleman in formal attire appears within a similar decorative border. The Banco de la Província de Buenos Aires was one of the most powerful provincial institutions in Argentina, frequently operating at odds with federal monetary policy in Buenos Aires City. This note was issued during a period of sustained tension between provincial and national banking authority — the very conflict that would contribute to the bank's forced federalization in 1891 following the Baring Crisis.
ABNC printed extensively for Argentine provincial issuers throughout this period, and the PS numbering confirms this as a provincial rather than national series. The distinction matters: provincial notes from this era were often refused at par outside their home province.
