The United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) authorized a patchwork of guerrilla currency across the Philippine islands during the Japanese occupation, and the notes issued by local headquarters units are among the most irregular of the series. The Balangiga, Samar issue is notable partly because of where it originates — Balangiga was the site of the 1901 massacre of U.S. Army soldiers by Pulahan fighters, an episode the occupation authorities would not have missed as symbolic backdrop.
These hyper-local emergency notes were produced with whatever paper and printing resources were available in the field. No Pick number has been firmly assigned, which reflects how poorly documented the full range of USAFFE guerrilla issues remains.
