Vilanova d'Escornalbou is a small municipality in the Baix Camp comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican monetary supply chains broke down. These local issues — known collectively as moneda local or paper moneda — were authorized under a general decree permitting municipalities to cover the chronic shortage of small-denomination coins that had been hoarded or melted almost immediately after July 1936.

Printed by Imprenta Solé in Tarragona, which produced notes for several area municipalities during this period, authentication relied on an official municipal stamp rather than any embedded security feature. Turró's catalog number 2839 places it within a well-documented but sparsely surviving class of hyperlocal Tarragona-province issues.
