Ugíjar is a small municipality in the Alpujarra region of Granada province, and its wartime scrip was issued during the Spanish Civil War when the Republican zone faced acute small-change shortages. The central government's inability to keep low-denomination coinage in circulation forced hundreds of Spanish municipalities — many of them tiny — to print their own emergency paper. Ugíjar was one of them.
The Gari Montllor catalogue documents this as issue D within the Ugíjar series, implying at least four distinct emissions from the same council — unusual volume for a town of this size.
