During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone suffered a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage — silver and copper had vanished from circulation within months of the July 1936 uprising. Municipalities across Catalonia responded by issuing their own paper fractional currency, legally authorized under a 1936 Generalitat decree. Tornabous, a village in the Urgell comarca with a population well under a thousand, was among the hundreds of tiny administrations that printed local emergency scrip simply to make change possible.
The Imprenta Crònica Targarina in nearby Tàrrega served as printer for several of these municipal issues in the comarca. The official stamp substitutes for any sophisticated security — entirely typical of the production constraints these small issuers faced.
