Serós is a small municipality in Lleida, Catalonia — population measured in the hundreds even today. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of Catalan municipalities issued their own emergency paper scrip when metallic coin effectively vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted down as the conflict deepened. This note is one of those issues, authorized under the wartime local currency framework that briefly gave municipal councils the legal cover to print their own fractional money.
Turró catalogues this as a distinct type, but surviving examples are genuinely scarce — the print runs from councils this small were limited, and most scrip was recalled or simply discarded once the Republican monetary situation collapsed after 1938.
