Riudecols is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona comarca, and like hundreds of Catalan and Republican-held towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when metal coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never reaching rural communities. The Consell Municipal stepped in as the de facto monetary authority for purely local exchange, a function it had no peacetime mandate to perform.
The municipal rubber stamp served as the only security feature, which made counterfeiting trivially easy in principle, though the hyper-local nature of these issues — worthless outside the issuing town — made forgery economically pointless. Turró catalogs over two thousand such issues from this period.
