Pinell de Brai is a village in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency when Republican-zone coins effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply never restocked. The Consell Municipal turned to Josep Bassa's print shop in nearby Mora d'Ebre, which supplied emergency notes to several surrounding towns during this period, making Bassa something of a regional monopolist in wartime municipal scrip.
The official stamp serves as the primary authenticity control — a thin line of defense for a note whose entire economic authority rested on local trust and the absence of alternatives. Turró catalogues this as #1832.
