Maià de Montcal is a small municipality in the Garrotxa comarca of Girona, and this 2 pesetas note is one of the paper currency issues produced by its local council during the Spanish Civil War. From 1936 onward, the Republican-controlled areas of Catalonia faced a severe shortage of small-denomination coinage — silver and copper had been hoarded or removed from circulation — prompting hundreds of Catalan ajuntaments to issue their own emergency paper.
Turró catalogues this as #1393, placing it within that well-documented but extraordinarily varied local emission phenomenon. The official stamp was the primary — often sole — authentication mechanism for issues of this type.
