Les Borges Blanques is the administrative capital of Les Garrigues comarca in Lleida province, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, its ajuntament issued fractional paper currency in 1937 to address the near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the chaos of wartime supply disruption. These local emissions were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's framework but executed entirely at the municipal level, which accounts for the wide variation in quality and survival rates across the series.
