Es Bòrdes is a tiny municipality in the Val d'Aran, the Pyrenean valley whose Occitan-speaking population occupies a genuinely anomalous administrative position within Catalonia. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of Catalan and Aragonese municipalities issued their own emergency fractional currency — *moneda local* — to offset a severe shortage of small change that followed the hoarding and melting of metal coinage after July 1936. This note is one of those issues.
Imprenta Escolar operated out of Les, the largest town in the valley, and printed for several surrounding municipalities. The simplicity of the production reflects both the printer's modest capabilities and the urgency of the need.
