L'Arboç is a small municipality in the Alt Penedès comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similar towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War after metal coinage disappeared from circulation almost entirely by mid-1936. These local municipal notes — known collectively as moneda local or guerra civil paper — were produced in extraordinary variety, with quality ranging from crude rubber-stamp affairs to reasonably competent small-format printing. This piece falls toward the more organized end of that spectrum, produced by a commercial print shop in the nearby town of El Vendrell.
