Higueruela is a small agricultural municipality in the province of Albacete, and like hundreds of similar Spanish towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. These local municipal notes, collectively known as "moneda local de necesidad," were authorised under wartime necessity rather than any coherent monetary policy, and the issuing authority was often the town council itself operating under improvised conditions.
