Golmés is a small agricultural municipality in the Pla d'Urgell comarca of Lleida, with a wartime population of perhaps a few hundred. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of fractional coinage — silver had vanished from circulation and the central authorities could not supply enough small change. The Catalan regional government formally authorized municipalities to issue their own emergency paper money in 1937, and hundreds of town councils did exactly that, printing notes locally in tiny quantities.
For a village this size, the entire issue likely ran to a few hundred pieces at most. Turró catalogues only the one denomination for Golmés, suggesting a deliberately minimal emission.
