During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of municipalities across Republican-held territory issued their own emergency fractional currency — locally printed vales or billetes de necesidad — to address the near-total disappearance of small-denomination coins from circulation, hoarded by a public with no confidence in the outcome. Cúllar-Baza, a small town in Granada province, was among them. These municipal emissions were authorised under the chaotic decentralised economic conditions of 1937 and carried no backing beyond local trust.
The Garrido Morillas reference for this emission is unresolved, suggesting the cataloguing community has not yet fully documented the full typology of Cúllar-Baza's output. Survivors are typically found in poor condition.
