Cuevas de Vinromá is a small municipality in Castellón, and like hundreds of other Republican-held towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply stopped being minted. The issuing body here is unusual: not the ayuntamiento itself but an agricultural and industrial cooperative, which suggests the local council either lacked the formal standing or simply delegated the task.
At 50 × 40 mm, this is among the smallest scrip formats produced anywhere in the war. The thick card stock was a deliberate choice — thin paper at that size would have disintegrated within weeks of handling.
