La Azucarera de Caniles was a sugar beet processing operation in the Granada province of Andalusia, and like dozens of Spanish agricultural and industrial enterprises during the early twentieth century, it resorted to issuing its own scrip when small-denomination coins vanished from circulation — particularly acute during the Republic and Civil War years when the central government failed to supply adequate fractional currency. These factory tokens on paper, known collectively as *vales* or *moneda de necesidad*, were redeemable only at the company store or against wages, effectively tying workers' purchasing power to the issuing firm.
The Gari Monereo catalogue documents these Spanish local issues exhaustively; the 437-F designation places this among the rarer surviving examples from the Granada series.
