Begíjar is a small municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia, with a population that barely reached 3,000 even at its peak. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of similarly small Republican-controlled towns issued their own emergency paper money — moneda local de necesidad — after the Nationalist uprising disrupted banking and drained metallic currency from circulation. Most of these councils had no printing infrastructure; many notes were produced on whatever stock was available, often with rubber stamps and handwritten serial numbers.
Documentation on the Begíjar series remains sparse in the major Spanish local issues catalogs, which itself signals a low original print run.
