Batea is a small agricultural municipality in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona province, and this note is a product of the anarchist-influenced local currency experiments that proliferated across Republican-held Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War. With the banking system disrupted and small coinage hoarded or melted, hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own emergency paper to keep local commerce moving — Batea among them.
Turró catalogues these municipal emissions extensively; #318 places this squarely within that documented regional phenomenon rather than any formally sanctioned monetary authority. The thick card stock was a practical choice — thinner paper degraded quickly under the handling conditions of wartime village economies.
