Barberà de la Conca is a small municipality in the Conca de Barberà comarca of Tarragona province, and this note is one of hundreds of tiny emergency issues produced across Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War after the collapse of normal coin circulation in 1936. The Republican government's inability to maintain a functioning small-denomination metallic currency pushed municipalities — many with populations under a thousand — into printing their own scrip. Imprenta Mestres in nearby Montblanc served several of these local administrations, which accounts for the typographic similarities found across multiple Turró-catalogued issues from the comarca.
