James II continued the Tudor and Stuart tradition of issuing Maundy money as part of the Royal Almonry ceremony, in which the sovereign distributed coins to the poor on Maundy Thursday — one recipient per year of the monarch's age. His reign lasted only three years before the Glorious Revolution of 1688 drove him into French exile, making his Maundy issues among the shortest-lived of any Stuart king. The 2 Pence was struck across all three years of the issue window, though quantities were small by design.
