The red-billed chough has served as the heraldic symbol of the Isle of Man for centuries, and its appearance on the decimal coinage of the early 1980s reflected a deliberate policy by the Manx authorities to distinguish their issues from British coinage through native iconography. Pobjoy Mint, which held the Isle of Man contract from 1973, produced silver and gold variants of the standard circulation types specifically for the collector market — the base-metal versions circulated freely while these struck at .925 moved straight into sets.
