The Isle of Man introduced a distinctive wildlife series for its decimal coinage following the island's adoption of its own currency in 1971, asserting fiscal independence from the UK while retaining the Crown as head of state. The red-billed chough holds particular significance on the island — it appears on the Manx coat of arms and has done so for centuries, making it a natural choice for the circulating coinage.
The .500 silver version was struck alongside the base-metal circulation issue, produced for collectors rather than commerce. Mintage figures for the silver variants in this series were modest, and the 1980 issues were produced under the Pobjoy Mint, which held the Isle of Man contract throughout this period.
