The Isle of Man has issued distinctive non-circulating and circulating coinage through the Pobjoy Mint since the 1970s, operating under a separate currency arrangement from the United Kingdom despite the pound sterling parity. The lugger depicted here was the workhorse of the Irish Sea herring fishery, a trade that once defined the island's economy before the industry's collapse in the late nineteenth century largely ended commercial Manx fishing at scale.
The KM#1037 sequence spans two Schön varieties, likely reflecting a change in the effigy portrait of Elizabeth II mid-run — a routine update the IOM applied more frequently than the Royal Mint.
