The switch from magnetic steel to bronze for this issue was a quiet reversal — the Royal Mint had briefly introduced steel planchets in 1992 before discovering they caused sorting failures in postal and vending machinery across the UK. Bronze production continued through the transition period, leaving a window in which both compositions circulated simultaneously. The non-magnetic designation now matters primarily to type collectors rather than spenders, as nearly all have long since been pulled from circulation by date checkers and hoarders who spotted the overlap.
