Ang Duong's coinage represents one of the last gasps of Khmer monetary independence before the French protectorate formalized control in 1863. Issued during a reign spent navigating between Siamese suzerainty and Vietnamese encroachment, these small silver pieces circulated in a kingdom that had spent decades as a contested buffer state. Ang Duong had actually invited French contact himself, writing to Napoleon III in 1853 seeking an alliance — a move that ultimately set the protectorate in motion.
