| Additional information |
The 1998 date places this coin in the final stretch of Portuguese administration — the handover to China occurred in December 1999, making late-1990s Macanese coinage some of the last issued under the authority of a European colonial government in Asia. The Monetary Authority of Macao had been established in 1989 specifically to manage this transition period, separating monetary functions from the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, which had issued currency in the territory since 1902.
