Obverse description Central field dominated by a large stylized Chinese character for good fortune or longevity rendered in traditional seal script, surmounted by an ornate decorative foliate crown motif. The Latin inscription MACAU is prominently displayed horizontally across the center of the character, with the numeral letters integrated into the design. The date 1998 is inscribed in large digits along the lower portion of the field, partially overlapping the base of the central character. The entire design is contained within an octagonal flan bordered by a continuous ring of raised beads.

Additional information

The 1998 date places this coin in the final stretch of Portuguese administration — the handover to China occurred in December 1999, making late-1990s Macanese coinage some of the last issued under the authority of a European colonial government in Asia. The Monetary Authority of Macao had been established in 1989 specifically to manage this transition period, separating monetary functions from the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, which had issued currency in the territory since 1902.
