Additional information

Montenegro struck its first modern coinage only in 1906, and the 2 Pare was among the small-denomination bronzes issued under Nikola I — the same ruler who declared himself king in 1910 and would lose his throne entirely when Austrian forces occupied the country in 1916. The 1913–1914 dating places this issue at the precise moment Montenegro was absorbing the territorial gains of the Balkan Wars while simultaneously being drawn toward the catastrophe that would end its independence permanently.
