Additional information

Montenegro's first modern coinage was issued under Prince Nikola I following the establishment of a national mint relationship with the Vienna Mint in 1906. The tiny principality had long relied on foreign coins for everyday commerce, and this bronze issue — the lowest denomination in the new series — represented the first time Montenegrins could conduct small transactions in their own currency. The series was short-lived; Montenegro's absorption into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes after World War I ended any further independent coinage.
