Nepal's brass coinage of the mid-1960s was minted under Mahendra Bir Bikram, who had seized direct control of government in 1960 by dissolving the elected parliament and imprisoning Prime Minister B.P. Koirala — a move he justified as necessary to save the country from political instability. The resulting "partyless" Panchayat system, which Mahendra ruled by decree, meant coinage issued during this period carried the weight of an explicitly authoritarian administration rather than a constitutional monarchy.
