Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran from the late 1960s through the 1970s and persuaded dozens of nations to mint coins bearing agricultural themes as a form of development messaging. Tonga's participation was modest but consistent. The FAO program coins were in many cases struck in larger-than-necessary denominations and sizes specifically to appeal to collectors — circulation was never the real point.
At 45mm, this is among the more physically imposing issues from the program.
