A scroll at the base carries the national motto MO TONGA KO HOKU in the central ribbon, flanked by secondary motto scrolls. The denomination TWO PA'ANGA arcs across the upper field, and the issuer name TONGA appears in the lower exergue. The reverse is bordered by a fine beaded inner rim. |

Taufa'ahau Tupou IV was crowned in July 1967, succeeding his mother Queen Sālote Tupou III, who had died the previous year after a reign of nearly 48 years. The coronation coinage was struck in a notably heavy specification — unusual for a Pacific island state of Tonga's size — reflecting both the ceremonial weight of the occasion and the kingdom's practice of issuing substantial collector-oriented pieces from its earliest modern coinage programs.
