| Obverse description | The national seal of Mauritania occupies the central field, depicting a crescent and five-pointed star above a palm tree flanked by traditional decorative elements. The Arabic legend reading 'الجمهورية الإسلامية الموريتانية' (The Islamic Republic of Mauritania) curves along the upper periphery. The denomination '٢ أوقيتان' (2 Ouguiya) and the Hijri year '١٤٤٠' appear in Arabic numerals at the lower portion of the field, separated by small star ornaments. |

Mauritania's 2018 coinage reform replaced the old aluminum-bronze pieces and introduced a revised series denominated in the ouguiya, itself a currency defined at five khoums — a subunit structure rooted in the traditional khoms fraction used in pre-colonial Saharan trade. The ouguiya was first introduced in 1973 when Mauritania left the West African CFA franc zone following independence consolidation, making it one of the later Francophone African nations to establish a wholly independent monetary system.
