Oscar II, ruling as king of both Sweden and Norway in personal union, presided over a monetary overhaul that brought Norway into the Scandinavian Monetary Union in 1875 — just one year before this type entered production. The union pegged the krone to gold and standardized coinage across Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, which is precisely why this coin exists: the old speciedaler system was swept out entirely.
The series ran until 1902, three years before the union with Sweden dissolved entirely following Norway's independence referendum of 1905.
