Beschrijving voorzijde At center, an engraved effigy of the Hoopoe (Upupa epops) is positioned to the right of the field, rendered in fine detail. The State emblem of Israel — a menorah flanked by olive branches — appears prominently, accompanied by the denomination '2 שקלים חדשים' in Hebrew and '2 NEW SHEQALIM' in Latin script. The word 'ISRAEL' is inscribed trilingually in Hebrew (ישראל), Arabic (إسرائيل), and Latin along the lower field. A commemorative legend reading 'INDEPENDENCE DAY 2009' in English and 'יום העצמאות התשס״ט' in Hebrew runs along the border, marking Israel's 61st Independence Day.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse depicts the three top-ranked birds from Israel's national bird competition: the Hoopoe (Upupa epops), winner of the poll, dominates the central field, flanked by the Blackcap Warbler and the Goldfinch, the two runners-up, all rendered in fine naturalistic relief. The birds are arranged in a decorative composition celebrating Israeli avifauna. A trilingual legend, 'BIRDS OF ISRAEL' in Latin script, 'ציפורי ישראל' in Hebrew, and 'طيور إسرائيل' in Arabic, runs along the border, encircling the design.

Aanvullende informatie

Israel's annual Independence Day coin series, which rotates through wildlife and natural heritage themes, featured native bird species in 2009 for the country's 61st anniversary. The hoopoe had been elected Israel's national bird just two years earlier, in 2008, following a public vote organized by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel — some 155,000 people participated.
