Israel's annual Hanukkah coin series, running since 1958, rotates through lamp designs drawn from Jewish communities across the diaspora. The Tunisian lamp chosen for this 1988 issue reflects the North African Jewish presence that predates the Arab conquest by centuries — communities whose distinct material culture, including their characteristic oil lamp forms, survived largely intact into the modern era before mass emigration to Israel following independence movements of the 1950s and 60s dramatically reshaped those populations.
