Akko (Acre) has changed hands more times than almost any port city in the Levant — Phoenician, Hellenistic, Roman, Arab, Crusader, Mamluk, Ottoman, British — and this issue commemorates that layered history as part of Israel's ongoing regional cities series. The 2010 date places it well into the Bank of Israel's long-running commemorative silver program, which has documented Israeli heritage sites and cities since the 1980s.
Akko was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, recognizing its largely intact Ottoman-era urban fabric built directly over Crusader substructures.
