The MUSE — Monnaie à Usage Solidaire et Écologique — is one of several dozen local complementary currencies that emerged across France following the 2014 law on the Social and Solidarity Economy, which gave formal legal recognition to monnaies locales for the first time. Saumur's version, anchored to the Loire Valley, is exchangeable at par with the euro through a network of participating merchants and associations who commit to ethical and ecological sourcing criteria.

The denomination name "pont Cessart" references the 18th-century stone bridge spanning the Loire at Saumur, built between 1756 and 1838 — one of the longest bridges in France at the time of its completion.
