| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central square hole surrounded by a raised rim. Four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform layout around the central perforation: 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left. The characters 常 (sang) and 平 (pyeong) appear in the vertical axis, while 通 (tong) and 寶 (bo) occupy the horizontal axis, together designating the coin as currency of the Sangpyeong (Ever-Normal) treasury administration of the Joseon Dynasty. |

Cast rather than struck, this piece was produced by one of several regional government agencies and military offices authorized to operate furnaces during the mid-Joseon period — a decentralized system that resulted in considerable variation in fabric and finish across otherwise identical types. The "Yong" and "Extend" counter-marks denote the issuing office and denomination authorization respectively, a bureaucratic layer added to manage the chronic coin shortages that plagued the Joseon economy through the eighteenth century.
