Reading top-to-bottom, the characters 常平 (Sangpyeong, the name of the Joseon government revenue office Sangpyeongcheong) appear in the vertical axis, while 通寶 (Tongbo, meaning 'circulating currency') appear in the horizontal axis. The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) with bold, well-formed strokes typical of mid-Joseon cast coinage. Some specimens exhibit a concave dot or star at the base of the obverse field, serving as a mint or batch differentiator. |
