| Obverse description | Cast copper cash coin of round form with a central square perforation, struck in the traditional East Asian cash style. Four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) are disposed in cruciform arrangement around the central square hole, reading clockwise from the top: 常 (right), 寶 (bottom), 通 (left), 平 (top), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), the standard inscription of Joseon Dynasty cash coinage. The fields between the characters show a recessed, slightly granular surface typical of sand-cast production, with a raised rim encircling the coin's periphery. |
