| Obverse description | Cast bronze cash-type coin centered on a square perforation, around which four Chinese characters are arranged in cruciform fashion in the fields. Reading top-to-bottom and right-to-left, the legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), identifying the issuing authority — the Sangpyeong (Changping) Office of the Korean Joseon Dynasty — and denoting the coin as currency (通寶, tongbao). The characters are rendered in standard script (kaishu) in the typical East Asian cash coin convention, with 常 at the top, 平 at the bottom, 通 to the right, and 寶 to the left of the central square hole. |
