The character 戸 (Ho), denoting the Treasury Department (Hojo), appears above the hole as the mint mark identifying the issuing authority. Below the hole, the character 昃 (Chuk/Juk), meaning 'declining afternoon sun' and representing one of the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching, functions as a furnace or batch identifier. The field surface is rough and uneven, consistent with the sand-cast production technique employed at Joseon Dynasty mints. This combination of mint mark and furnace designation is characteristic of the Sangpyong Tongbo series issued during the mid-eighteenth century. |
